Love is Love Blog Hop

What is love? Who defines what love is?

Love isn't sexual attraction although that maybe part of it. Love isn't being able to marry although that's certainly one way of affirming their commitment. Vivian Boyack and Alice 'Nonie' Dubes have been together for seventy-two years and have finally married in their nineties.

Over the centuries lawmakers and religious bodies (singlar and plural) have believed they have the right to dictate what is marriage, or rather what marriage is not. Anything outside one man and one woman, or one man and several women in certain societies, is wrong. But in the past love wasn't a consideration of marriage.

Now it's the twenty-first century and at least in Western society, people marry for love. And suddenly laws are changing and some people haven't caught up. They refuse to believe LGBT people can love as truly, madly and deeply as straight people. I refuse to link to any anti-gay sites but it's easy enough to find on Google. It's also easy enough to find stories of gay people who've been together for decades like Vivian and Nonie.

As society slowly realises that allowing two men or two women to love and marry each other is not going to bring down civilisation, so the same people trot out the slippery slope arguments but it's hard to argue that the world is going to end when countries have had same sex marriage for years and strangely enough, God hasn't destroyed them.

Does it make a difference who a guy or girl loves?

At the moment I think it does. Love is love and we need to see it in all forms.

Mr and Mrs Joe Public need to see guys and girls walking down the road hand in hand.
The young gay teen needs to see people like him.
The older lesbian needs to know she can step out of the closet.

At the moment it matters but one day it might not. And that day will truly be a victory for love is love.
